If you’re looking for a cultural activity in Tokyo that goes beyond sightseeing—and one that lets you feel Japan in your whole body—then a taiko drum experience might be exactly what you’re searching for.
This beginner-friendly workshop surprised me in the best way possible.
It wasn’t just loud, exciting, and energetic…
It was deeply connecting, incredibly fun, and something that made everyone in the room smile like kids again.
Whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, as a couple, or as a family, this is the kind of cultural experience that becomes the highlight of your trip.
What Is Taiko Drumming?
Taiko (太鼓) simply means “drum” in Japanese, but the moment you hear it, you’ll realize it’s much more than an instrument.
It’s rhythm, energy, movement, and spirit all combined. Historically used in festivals and ceremonies, taiko carries an intensity that vibrates through your chest.
And the best part?
You don’t need any musical background to enjoy it.
In this workshop led by Taiko Performer & Instructor Junya Tsukamoto, anyone can jump in and instantly feel the joy of hitting the drum, shouting with the group, and syncing rhythms together.
The Experience Begins: Stepping Into a Taiko Studio
The moment you step inside the studio, you’re greeted by rows of beautiful Japanese drums and wooden sticks called bachi. The atmosphere feels both traditional and exciting—like stepping backstage at a festival.
Participants come from all over the world, and even before the workshop starts, you can sense the shared excitement.
Learning the Basics (Don’t Worry—It’s Easy!)
Junya-sensei starts by teaching simple movements:
- How to hold the bachi
- How to stand with good posture
- How to strike the drum so it makes a powerful sound
- How to shout together to build energy
From the very beginning, the class is full of laughter and “Wow!” moments.
Nobody takes themselves too seriously—this workshop is made for beginners.

Shouting “Yo-Yo!” and Feeling the Energy Rise
One of the workshop’s signature elements is shouting “Yo-Yo!” together—a rhythmic cheer that instantly boosts the energy in the room.
It’s impossible not to smile when twenty people from ten different countries shout the same word in perfect rhythm.
This moment alone makes the class unforgettable.
Learning the Traditional 3-3-7 Rhythm
Next comes the famous Japanese cheering rhythm: 3-3-7.
It’s simple, powerful, and instantly recognizable to anyone who has seen Japanese sports or festivals.
You practice it step by step:
- 3 beats
- Another 3 beats
- Then 7 beats together
Once everyone’s sticks hit the drum at the same exact timing…
the entire room explodes with sound.
This is where people begin to look at each other with wide eyes, amazed that strangers can suddenly feel like a team.

Becoming One Team: Playing the Final Performance
After some practice, it’s time for the group performance—the climax of the experience.
You combine everything you’ve learned:
- the stance
- the shouts
- the 3-3-7 rhythm
- the basic patterns
- the group timing
Everyone gives it their all.
You can feel the floor shake.
You can feel the smiles growing.
You can feel the energy of becoming one team.
Even the shy participants are fully immersed by this stage.
Many say this is one of the most memorable moments of their entire trip to Japan.
